The Ultimate Game
The ultimate chess set is a redesign project focused on transforming an everyday object into a meaningful and interactive experience. By rethinking the matchbox as a compact, one-time chess game, the project explores how simple materials can take on new purpose through design. Each matchstick represents a chess piece, arranged by height from king to pawn. The game follows traditional chess rules, with a unique twist: when a piece is captured, the matchstick must be burned, permanently removing it from play.
The process began with rapid ideation using sketches and post-its, followed by cardboard and paper mock-ups to refine proportions, structure, and interaction. The final prototype includes a flat-pack graphic layout, a functional matchbox board, and a full set of height-graded matchsticks. The design is supported by bold matchbox-style graphics and a clear instruction system on the back. Matchbox Chess stands as a compact, collectible object that brings together product design, interaction, and material behavior through a simple and familiar form.
